Jurija Gagarina – Čardak

Novi Sad

2020

The idea behind the House on Čardak, for what has been popularly referred to as an escape from the city, originated from a simple requirement — to maximize the position of the plot with a view of the neighboring hill, Popovicia, and the city.

The steep profile of the plot dictated the approach to design, as well as the idea of showcasing all the extroverted aspects of the building from the courtyard side, without compromising the desired privacy.

The simple form, accentuated by anthracite aluminum windows and metal sheets, along with the red brick facade that follows the thread of neighboring buildings and their walls and roof tiles partially made of red brick, emerged naturally. When combined with the favorable configuration of the plot featuring a pool, the picture is complete without the need for redundant details.

We often witness the failure to adapt to existing surroundings, as buildings, in their desire for self-expression, create an impression that we particularly want to avoid especially in such urban environments. This awareness is becoming increasingly apparent worldwide.
